Wood is the only natural product used in boat building today. There are many things you have to consider when deciding on the kind of wood to use. It swells and contracts and requires a finish that is flexible. Wood may be contaminated with fungal spores that will cause rot and decay. It may be infested with insects. Softwood may have a lot of sap content that affects the adherance of the finish.

It is a good rule to make sure that when applying the coatings or fiberglass to wood, that it has no more than an 11% moisture level.

Woods, such as mahogany, work well in seawater because of an antiseptic quality. The same wood will rot in fresh water.

Softwoods have long grains and can be put to good use in spars and masts. Hardwoods like white oak make great frames and interior panels, however, the tannin reacts with ferrous fasteners forming tannic acid. This causes the wood around the fastener to turn black and decay, loosening the fitting. When using plywood, make sure it is fir.
